[Virtual] Psychedelic Justice: BIQPOC Voices Matter

Black, Indigenous, Queer, and People Of Color (BIQPOC). Why is there such low representation in public spaces of the psychedelic community and how we can make it a priority to elevate these voices and listen to their perspective? How is the experience of psychedelic journeywork different for someone who is non-white, gender non-conforming, or other identities outside of the dominant culture and social norms? In the age of psychedelics becoming more mainstream, what does justice look like for the psychedelic community, and what is our role in bringing it about? Please join us for a panel—with four individuals representing various intersections of these identities—to delve into conversation about such questions regarding race, equity, justice, BIQPOC inclusion, and more, as it pertains to the psychedelic experience and community.

[San Diego] Psychedelics as a Novel Approach to Autoimmune Diseases

With an epidemic rising in autoimmune and inflammatory conditions and a resurgence of interest in psychedelic medicines, it seems inevitable that the two fields will soon intertwine. Pharmacological and anecdotal evidence suggests that psychedelic compounds may have useful implications in the treatment of chronic autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Emerging research is beginning to highlight the immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory effects of these compounds, as well as their effect on vagal nerve tone, the microbiome and psychological traumas that initiate autoimmune mechanisms in the body. Psychedelics address both psychospiritual and physiological elements of disease, providing a comprehensive and holistic approach to healing. This talk will thoroughly present existing evidence that psychedelics have potential to provide great relief in this area of medicine covering a broad range of relevant observed effects.

[Los Angeles] The Shaman's Drum: Healing in Non-Ordinary States

  • Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Shamanism has been practiced all over the world for tens of thousands of years. The late anthropologist Michael Harner distilled a set of core beliefs and methods used by shamans from widely varied cultures and geographic regions. One such method is rhythmic drumming to induce altered states of consciousness where where healing and guidance are available from the spiritual realm. Thanks in part to Harner’s teachings, shamanism has undergone a resurgence in recent decades, and shamanic techniques are now used by non-indigenous people for healing and guidance. Shamanic practitioner Sage Heart will discuss the core elements of shamanism, and participants will learn specific methods to inform their own practice. This will include a shamanic drumming experience with a journey into the non-ordinary reality of shamanic cosmology, guiding you to access your own deep spiritual wisdom. Participants are requested to bring something that can be used as a blindfold (such as a bandana) and are encouraged to bring a small hand drum or rattle if they have one.

[San Diego] Psychedelic Awareness Discussion Panel : Rethinking Drug Policy

  • UCSD campus, center hall room 113 (map)

As scientific research expands in psychedelic medicine, public opinion is rapidly shifting. As psychedelic medicines seem poised to be accepted by the FDA, the broader medical community, and, increasingly, in society's mainstream, the right questions must be asked to ensure human rights-based and justice-informed policy reform. Even with broader acceptance of these compounds, many people will still face criminalization and prosecution for possession, disproportionately affecting communities of color. It's time to start talking about reforming drug policy so that psychedelic interventions are not only destigmatized by science but also accessible to all, including the historically marginalized and oppressed. Join us for the first, and long-overdue Aware Project panel in which we discuss the next steps of psychedelic activism and affecting drug policy reform that serves the greater good of public health, social justice, and human rights.

[San Diego] Qualitative Analysis of MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD

The growing prevalence of PTSD in our society has devastating consequences for afflicted individuals and their loved ones. New treatments using MDMA combined with psychotherapy have shown success in treating this intractable condition. This talk summarizes preliminary qualitative findings from the MAPS Phase II clinical trial on MDMA-assisted therapy for treatment-resistant PTSD. Study participants were interviewed one year after treatment ended, where they were given the chance to express how they integrated the benefits from the treatment back into their personal contexts and life routines. From this information, researchers were able to explore the nuances of participants’ unique experience during and after the study, analyze common improvements and challenges faced by participants after treatment ended, and investigate factors that may contribute to long-term success. Since this is the first qualitative analysis on a clinical trial for MDMA-assisted therapy, the talk also addresses the importance of qualitative research in the field, and suggestions for how to improve upon the research.
