TALK TITLE: The Diligent Intention: How MDMA-assisted Psychotherapy Saved My Life

DESCRIPTION
Life-threatening illness, life-problems, complex family dynamics do not discriminate. We all wrestle with serious issues at some point, and sometimes these things take us all the way down and break us. In this discussion, John Saul shares his story about how he harnessed the experience of being a study subject in the MAPS-sponsored study: “MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety due to life-threatening illness” to emerge from very dark circumstances, rebuild his fortitude and take another turn at living life.

BIO
John Saul is a normal guy who is rebuilding his life after having it turned upside-down 5 years ago. He had owned a small business in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he was grinding away to make it succeed. Over time, financial problems, family issues and questions about what he’d decided to do with his life and career came to the forefront and began choking the joy out of his life. In late 2012, he was struck by systemic sclerosis, or “scleroderma,” a debilitating, painful, incurable life-threatening illness. Through many means, including participation as a study subject in the MAPS sponsored Phase II study: “MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety due to life-threatening illness,” John has been able to emerge out of the darkest place one could find themselves and rebuild his fortitude and his life. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can show others that that it is possible to choose life over death, become your own cure, and meet the resulting challenge
