TALK TITLE

Psilocybin Decriminalization: Denver First, California Next! (and how you can help)

DESCRIPTION

Psilocybin Mushrooms have exploded into the national conversation. Science has demonstrated their efficacy as powerful tools to treat mental health issues and enhance wellness. Michael Pollan introduced their uses to the mainstream and spurred a conversation that has everyone from therapists to soccer moms talking about them. Denver made history by becoming the first municipality in the country to decriminalize mushrooms, and now California aims to be the first state in the union to decriminalize these mysterious fungal medicines. Please join us for a discussion with Kevin Matthews, the Executive Director of Decriminalize Denver, and Ryan Munevar, the Campaign Director of Decriminalize California, as we cover this burgeoning movement. Topics to include: why the time has come for psilocybin decriminalization, lessons from Denver, the current status of the California campaign, what you can do to be a part of the movement, and more.

BIOS

Kevin Matthews spearheaded the first campaign in the United States to successfully decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms, in Denver, CO on May 7, 2019. He is the Executive Director of Decriminalize Denver and is currently devoted to liberating psilocybin and creating culture via bottom-up legislative change. He is devoted to his community, especially his family and talented wife Sheva and son, Zohar. He spends his focus on educating policymakers, facilitating connections, contributing resources, and creating opportunities to reform nationwide drug policy.

Ryan Munevar got his start in the Cannabis Industry back in Detroit, Michigan while filming a documentary on legalization in 2010. It wasn’t long before he became a volunteer working for Repeal Today, a statewide Initiative to Legalize Cannabis in Michigan. In 2013, he returned to California and founded Monterey County NORML(National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and began turning on the county and local cities with open source draft initiatives. Later in 2015 he co-founded CannabisPermits.com and began winning local permits across the state.
As a reward for winning a permit in the city of Seaside he was given a percentage of Sugar Leaf Trading Company, that later sold to MedMen in 2019 for over $3,000,000. He immediately took his shares and put it towards setting up Decriminalize California.

And someday after the campaign is won he will turn his cell phone off and sleep for a week.
