TALK TITLE
No Guru. No Method. No Teacher: Iboga & The Healer Within
DESCRIPTION
Iboga, a West African root bark which produces strong psychedelic effects, has gained buzz in Western society for its ability to treat addictions and as a tool for spiritual growth. But how does the use and understanding of this medicine in the West compare with the traditional use in the African cultures of its origin? Please join us for a wide-ranging conversation with Dimitri Mugianis, where we will discuss the traditional and medical history of iboga, the commodification of plant medicines, and the dangers inherent in the trend of medicalizing iboga. If you are interested in iboga, its uses for spirituality and/or addiction, the sustainable and ethical use of plant medicines, and/or are concerned with the commodification of plant medicines, then this talk is for you.
BIO
For more than a decade, Dimitri Mugianis has been one of the most prolific advocates of ibogaine in the world. Initiated into the spiritual tradition of Bwiti in Gabon, central Africa in 2006, Dimitri has taken what he has learned and adapted it in a Western context. Dimitri ended a twenty-year heroin habit with help from Iboga 16 years ago. He went on to work extensively with the plant, bringing it to the US and providing treatment for addicts despite its illegality. He is a co-founder of the Universalist Bwiti Society, a registered religious institution in New York state.
When not providing ceremony, he works at New York Harm Reduction Educators, providing holistic modalities for active drug users in Harlem. He is a writer, public speaker, and host of the podcast Dimitri Mugianis Talks.
