TALK DESCRIPTION:

Come out for a great talk and some music afterwards!

Recent studies demonstrate that ibogaine is incredibly effective for treatment of opioid addiction. The mechanisms by which it reduces withdrawal symptoms and helps people reduce problematic drug use are unclear, however. At this Aware Project event, we will explore the therapeutic role of the subjective effects of ibogaine, a powerful psychedelic substance that engenders a "waking dream" state. Our exploration will utilize a qualitative methodology to examine individuals' ibogaine experiences and before/after interviews from people who've received ibogaine treatment for opioid addiction.

We will enjoy the talk by Kingsley, then promptly at 9pm , those interested can transition to the next room for drinks and music as AC Lounge will be featuring dj's and emcees for their local hip hop night. Come join us for a different type of Aware Project event!

BIO

Thomas Kinglsey Brown has been interested in altered states of consciousness since his early twenties when he was a graduate student in chemistry. Initially this interest led him to work in a neuroscience lab studying the proteins putatively involved in memory and learning. He left that work due to ethical qualms regarding animal research, and a few years later started graduate study in anthropology. Along with an MA and PhD in Anthropology (UC San Diego) he also holds a master’s degree in Chemistry (Caltech, 1989) and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry ( University of Pittsburgh, 1986). His MA thesis was a cross-cultural phenomenological and brain-states comparison of shamanic and trance states. His doctoral thesis, “Spiritual Seekers and ‘Finding a Spiritual Home,” examined the roles of mystical and anomalous experiences in religious conversion (specifically conversion to Christian Spiritualism). For the past ten years, he has been studying ibogaine-assisted treatment for opioid addiction. In 2009 he conducted interviews with patients at an ibogaine clinic in Mexico and collected data for the purpose of studying quality of life for those patients. From 2010-2012 he was the lead investigator working with MAPS on a Mexico-based observational study of the long-term outcomes for people receiving ibogaine-assisted treatment for opioid dependence. In 2013, he published a review article on ibogaine treatment in Current Drug Abuse Reviews. In 2018, along with Dr. Kenneth Alper, he published (in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse) the first scientific article on the results of his observational study, the first such study of its kind. He is also the lead author of an article (in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, January 2019) on the therapeutic relevance of the psychoactive properties of ibogaine. He has presented at more than 20 conferences on the topic of ibogaine treatment for substance dependence, including Horizons: Perspectives on Psychedelics and TEDx Venice Beach, both in 2017. He currently coordinates the McNair Scholars Program at UC San Diego, a position he has held for nearly 14 years. The program prepares first-generation college students from low-income households for doctoral study and careers in research.
