2016 August 17: We are excited to host friends of the Salon Dr. Marta and Dr. Ryan to share their research on ketamine. Dr. Marta is also heading up the Los Angeles MAPS phase 3 site to study the efficacy of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. This will be a great update on the current status and progress of developing psychedelics into legal medicines!
TITLE: Ketamine Therapy and Drug Development Dr. Wesley Ryan, MD and Dr. Cole Marta, MD will begin with a summary of how drugs gain FDA approval, as well as review the DEA drug scheduling guidelines. They will present information summarizing the current evidence for the efficacy and safety of ketamine treatment for treatment resistant depression, as well as proposed mechanisms of action, where we are now from a clinical perspective, and an exploration of the future of this treatment. After the presentation there will be a panel discussion and all attendees are encouraged to participate and explore the topic together.
BIOS: Dr. Cole J Marta, M.D. - Dr. Marta completed undergraduate studies at UC – Santa Cruz majoring in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology where he graduated with highest honors in the major, with a focus on genetics. After graduating, he was a Junior Specialist in a Howard Hughes Medical Institute laboratory studying neurogenetics in the model organism C. Elegans. After time as an emergency medical technician and assistant in special education, he returned to scholarly pursuits and earned an MD from Chicago Medical School. He then went on to specialize in psychiatry, completing his residency at UCLA San Fernando Valley Veteran Association Psychiatry Training Program. While there, he focused on psychotherapy and psychopharmacology pertaining to mental illness. He also participated in cutting-edge research at UCLA related to mood, anxiety, substance use, and post-traumatic stress disorder. He has published peer-reviewed articles on advanced psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. He has also presented at conferences on the specific topics of the safety and efficacy of psychedelics in the context of both healing intent and abuse populations. Since graduating from psychiatric training, he has been involved in psychedelics research, harm reduction efforts, and increasingly in public speaking while maintaining his private practice in Southern California. Wesley C. Ryan, M.D. - Dr. Ryan is in private practice in Los Angeles, CA where he specializes in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, as well as the use of ketamine for psychotherapy and treatment resistant depression. He maintains an active interest in research, having been published on cannabis, ibogaine, MDMA, ketamine, and hallucinogens. He completed his undergraduate studies in Microbiology at University of California, Davis, where he worked in a glycobiology research lab and characterized several microbial enzymes. Dr. Ryan went on to study medicine at University of California, Irvine, and then complete psychiatry residency at the University of California, Los Angeles - San Fernando Valley, followed by a fellowship in addiction psychiatry at the University of Washington.
